Purpose of carotid Doppler

It evaluates blood flow in neck arteries, detecting plaques or stenosis that raise stroke risk.

Warning signs

  • Dizziness, fainting spells, or blurred vision.
  • Sudden headache with facial weakness or numbness.
  • High blood pressure, diabetes, or elevated cholesterol.
  • Family history of stroke or arterial disease.

When to get it

  • After a transient neurologic episode (TIA) to rule out stenosis.
  • As routine control in patients with cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Follow-up for known plaques or after vascular procedures.

Preparation and timing
